for the cliche`’s sake-a coma101 blog entry

They say “simplicity is beauty”. So the truism goes.

Being simple and plain in explaining certain occurrence actually gives a lot of advantages. Parsimony, for one thing gives one a brief and succinct explanation on a specific phenomenon. It is through simple things that an individual easily understands what is in front of him/her. Parsimonious elucidation of things as well as theories provides people with unambiguous view on the certain subject matter they are trying to comprehend.

However, parsimony is not always a good thing. There are some instances that a certain circumstance can not be explained by a parsimonious justification or explanation. Though the Principle or Law of Parsimony states that things are usually connected or behave in the simplest or most economical way especially with reference to alternative evolutionary pathways(New Oxford Dictionary), it is not always with the simplest or the most parsimonious explanation that things or phenomena are explained in a way that laymen can truly grasp its real essence without any speck of confusion building in their minds. Below are the advantages and disadvantages of parsimony as grasped from the readings.

Advantages of Parsimony:

1. Simple.

Example, you are explaining a math problem to a current member of an anti-math society. No matter how long your explanations are, if they are very complicated and tangled, cognition is still out of sight for the anti-math society member.

2. Laconic.

Terse explanation gives everything at hand. In that exact explanation, the very thing that is trying to be understood is simply presented in a straightforward and not in a convoluted way. Therefore with less words less mistakes are expected.

Disadvantages of Parsimony:

1. Obscure

This occurs when a certain situation needs to be thoroughly discussed. With parsimony, many details are not clearly expressed and exposed or easily understood.

2. Indefinite

With parsimony some ideas or even the main idea will not be able to be relied on. This is because of the very simple explanation, which sometimes causes uncertainty to many people. Some valuable details are not presented well thus not enough information is conveyed and the recipient of this information have no choice but accept what is conveyed to him/her even if there are many uncertainty.

3. Not Elaborate

Many phenomena either simple or complex, but most of the time the ones that are complex demands detailed and ornate theories. However if they are explained parsimoniously, their real essence and complexities are unrecognized in a way that they will be appreciated less.

Clarity is the main essence of explaining why and how things or phenomena happen. Even though they say that why should one take the hard way when the easier and more convenient one is there, it is still important to explain by detail a certain occurrence.

Parsimony is not always a good thing, this stand is clearly back up with its advantages and disadvantages specifically presented above. Though there are many advantages, we can not deny that with its advantages there are also its weak points that are undeniably crucial.
